For the most part. I used to anticipate running into them and having a go with them about their doctrine. Now I no longer care. I just want to be left alone.

Do You Try To Avoid The Witnesses When You See Them?

i happen to see jws a lot while visiting my mom.
they don't go there with me, which works well for all concerned..

Dumbed down version of the Reasoning Book to go with the new Bible
It couldn't possibly be dumbed down any further. It was done to perfection the first time around.

It must have been a brother!
by hoser ini was listening to a conversation of jws recently about how trusting they are with each other and how out in "the world" you have to be ever so careful that you don't put down your purse or wallet for a minute otherwise it will be stolen.. i entered the conversation with an experience that one of my close friends had.
(true story) he was in a public place with a wallet with significant amount of cash and bank card, credit card, id, etc.. somehow he lost or misplaced the wallet, panicked of course.
he went to the police, cancelled all his cards and thought it was gone for sure.

Most JWs simply can't wrap their head around the notion that there are good and honest people in the world. It doesn't fit their narrative of 'worldly' people. If they start thinking of them in those terms, the idea that God is going to annihilate them becomes far less palatable.

Is the Russian action in the Crimea prophetic gold for the GB?
by konceptual99 inso chatter on the net and in coffee shops suggests lots of speculation about the re-emergence of russia as the king of the north.
does this political situation give the gb a golden opportunity to simply let speculation about prophecy fly and keep people distracted from the fact that nothing they have prophecied has actually come true?.

Yes. Any significant world event, or change in its political culture is a JW's wet dream. It feeds their delusion that the end is near, and their lives spent waiting for it haven't been in vain.
And of course the GB will exploit that by distorting whatever scripture they can come up with to make it look like prophecy is somehow being fulfilled. It's a never ending cycle.

Ever feel like you were faking it as a JW when you weren't?
by punkofnice ini guess this is cognitive dissonance calling loud and clear!.
i remember being proud to be a jw yet at the same time i felt that i was just fooling myself.. i think this also applies to the stupid doctrines of the watchtower(r).......they made sense but at the same time they didn't.. i had secret self loathing for not being 'zealous(tm)' enough but on the other hand i didn't.. seems to me i had a separation of authentic persona from cult persona.. anyone else get this?.

There were many times, especially in the ministry, where I had to convince myself that I was actually enjoying it. It always made me feel like there was something wrong with me when I saw the zest that others had for it, when I had none.

Welcome, GoUnion! A moving first post, and similar to the experience shared by a lot of people here. I was a born-in who wishes I'd had the courage to investigate my own doubts long before I did. I look forward to hearing more from you.

How exactly is the Holy Spirit 'directing' the WT?
by keyser soze init seems pretty impotent to me if it is.. let's assume, for the sake of argument, that they are merely 'spirit-directed', as opposed to 'inspired'.
and let's assume that there is even a difference(other than semantics) to begin with.
neither claim is validated by the end result.

Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that they are merely 'spirit-directed', as opposed to 'inspired'. And let's assume that there is even a difference(other than semantics) to begin with. Neither claim is validated by the end result. Not when, under the direction of Holy Spirit, the words they print are subject to human error, and the constant need for correction(or new light). And not when, under the direction of Holy Spirit, corruptible men can be appointed to positions of authority, and often removed shortly after. So what, exactly, is the Holy Spirit doing for them? It's nothing more than a hollow claim, made for the sole purpose of garnering blind obedience from the flock.

Why are they still going door to door?
by Euphemism inhey all, long time no see!.
a friend posted the anthony morris videos on facebook today, and the ensuing conversation got me wondering: why are the jws still going door-to-door in the developed world?.
it's clearly useless as an evangelizing tactic; the wt have recognized that for 20 years, with their "go where the people are" spiel, but they also insist that it's still necessary.. .

It's busy work for the rank and file, as others have stated. It's also how the elders and those higher up are able to keep tabs on the rank and file. A JW's spirituality, and thus their qualifications for 'privilges' in the congregation, are gauged in large part by how many hours they spend preaching.
It isn't about gaining converts, it's about proving themselves to other JWs.
